Surrounded by vineyards and lush, green pastures, the small town of Lignan, with a population of 750 inhabitants, is just a 15min drive from Bordeaux’s ring road. A beautiful Romanesque church overlooks the village, just right for a couple’s photoshoot! I can assure you that this setting is ideal for the perfect wedding.
Located in the commune is a magnificent 8th century castle, the Château de Seguin, which underwent renovations in the 18th century. Set in a sea of vines, it was built using local materials.
The property covers an impressive 427 acres including 235 acres of vineyards. If you are looking for a typical Bordeaux wedding in the vines, you have come to the right place!
The Château de Seguin produces mainly red “Bordeaux Supérieur” wines as well as white and sparkling wines under the “Bordeaux Blanc” appellation.
The main grape varieties for the reds are:
– Cabernet Sauvignon
– Cabernet Franc
– Petit Verdot
The grape varieties for the white wines are:
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Sauvignon Gris
Given the diverse range of grapes, you will easily find the ideal wine for your wedding according to your personal tastes and budget.
As you read this article you are probably asking yourself why I am telling you about this place?
As a Bordeaux wedding photographer, I am used to seeing a lot of venues throughout the year. It is part of my job to give you ideas and recommend the best places around in order to make sure that your special day is a truly unforgettable moment.
In my opinion, this setting is quite magical and has all the qualities for the quintessential Bordeaux wedding.
5 GOOD REASONS TO GET MARRIED AT THE CHÂTEAU DE SEGUIN
THE BEAUTY OF THE CASTLE
This is not just your typical “Château”, like you may have already visited. This one sets itself apart because it was restructured in the 18th century, which gives it the charm of one of the mythical Loire castles whilst keeping the Bordelais charm.
2. THE LARGE GARDEN IDEAL FOR OUTSIDE RECEPTIONS AND THE INNER COURTYARD IN CASE YOU NEED A PLAN B
Honestly, however many guests you plan on having at your wedding, you will have plenty of space on the vast and beautifully kept lawn behind the castle.
There are many trees including a century old cedar to let you choose between sun and shady corners, ideal for setting up the caterer’s station, the wedding ceremony or even a live music band, which is what Alexandra and Maxime did.
Furthermore, the setting is just right for wedding pictures and the bouquet-throwing ceremony. I have used a lot of the surrounding landscape for the couple’s photoshoot- this is a real playground for a creative photographer.
See for yourself and have a look at the natural, late-afternoon light on the pictures J
It is also great to have a plan B in case the weather does not go as planned.
The 165 m2 covered courtyard can hold a large number of guests for the cocktail and/or wedding ceremony so no need to worry about the weather forecast!
It is located between the castle’s external courtyard and the banquet hall, which is over 1100m2 so no problem once again when it comes to space for entertainment.
3 THE INTERIOR’S LUXURIOUS AND OLD FASHIONED CHARM
The first time that I saw the inside of this castle I was immediately inspired for all sorts of fun photos, I have not taken them all yet, because there is so much a professional photographer is able to do here.
Besides the artistic touch present throughout the whole building, the rooms are superbly decorated. The vast nuptial suite has plenty of natural light flowing through it- perfect for capturing the wedding preparations.
It is very rare to have this sort of lighting in a Bordeaux castle, which gives a very pleasant ambiance, partly due to the local stone used for the interior. The decor and atmosphere reminds us of the unique history of the Château de Seguin, I was particularly charmed by the dining room table where I took pictures of the wedding rings and used the beautiful light for the the bridesmaid’s portraits.
4° THE REFURBISHED AND VAST BANQUET HALL, FULL OF CHARM
If there’s one more argument to convince you, it is the Château de Seguin’s majestic banquet hall, which was fully renovated to be as practical and alluring as possible.
There are many requirements when it comes to choosing the reception area, space being one of them. You will not be lacking any here, with over 300m2 and seating for up to 300 guests. Again, the mood and light are quite spectacular allowing professional photographers to take evening shots without even having to use a flash and possibly disturbing any of the guests.
For the little ones there is an adjoining nursery fully equipped with mattresses, T.V (with kids’ channels), DVD player, and video games allowing the younger guests to unwind after a hectic day 🙂
5° THE CHÂTEAU DE SEGUIN’S ACCOMMODATION, A SPECIAL PLACE TO STAY FOR YOUR LOVED ONES
There are 6 rooms in the Château de Seguin, all equipped with en-suite bathrooms allowing 12 to 13 guests to stay on site. Whilst passing by last week I noticed that several other rooms were being renovated, which will allow extra accommodations in the near future.
Here’s a taste of what to expect shortly:
5 guestrooms, all equipped with private bathrooms including 1 large suite that can accommodate up to 4 people.
There will also be a small cottage on the estate: La Maison du Lac (the Lake House) with 2 rooms and one convertible sofa bed in the living room, allowing up to 6 guests to stay there.
In total, the Château de Seguin will be able to host 33 people, which means that your loved ones will be able to stay on site with you, yet another plus (especially if you are planning a family brunch around the swimming pool the following day).
You may have noticed by now, I am very fond of this Bordeaux castle. In my experience as a professional wedding photographer I have rarely come across a place where the inside and outside light is as favourable for taking great pictures throughout the whole day without having to use the flash or adjust the lighting. I can hardly wait to go back there this year and I already have some new ideas for the future married couples!
